Apple(AAPL)

Apple is no longer the dreamer it used to be.

You, your friends, parents, or even grandparents ALL know about it. Apple is a cool company. I think so, too. But is it a good company to invest in the long run? I am not so sure now for the following reasons.

Universal Display Corp(PANL)

A couple of years ago, I received a forwarded email from a friend. There were pictures about the future of the Internet search. It was a tablet-like device, and it used a transparent display. When you point it to a park or building, it will display brief information about the objects. Touch a tree or a floor, it will tell you the name of the tree, or the name of the company in it. Its pretty much a do-it-all device. At the time I thought it was cool but the technology was still far away. But Samsung showed a transparent netbook at the 2010 CES which caught my attention and got me thinking that OLED display may come to us faster than we think.

In 2005, the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) introduced the concept of the Internet of Things. What it simply means is that Things can talk to Things. For instance, if something (maybe raining) just happened in SF, a Thing” (Car windshield?) detected it, and sends this information from Thing to Thing. Maybe you were driving from San Jose to SF, you will know this information in advance so you may decide to head back home or continue to drive to SF. This is just one application. There are probably millions of other applications. To be able to connect things to things, chips or sensors will need to be embedded massively. This is an ongoing technology. It is not completely new. So, whats the point of discussing it right now? The answer is China!

Carbon Sciences(CABN)

We have all heard a lot about global warming long ago, but it was until recently that we actually felt it coming. All the severe storms, snows occurred not long ago, and the lines between 4 seasons sure are getting blurred. I am not sure if earthquakes are one of the global warming effects, but we sure had a lot of noticeable quakes this year.

Qualcomm(QCOM)

In the past decade, PC makers emphasis on the performance of the individual computer. Such as, faster CPU, bigger RAM, more storage...etc. However, this process has reached its limit, the CPU released this year may be a few nanoseconds faster or a few nanometers smaller than last year. Most people no longer care if its Pentium, Core 2 Duo, Xeon or whatsoever.
